“There were a good four or five months of not being able to get out of bed … It was the worst time in my life … I spend a lot of time just holed up in my house in Los Angeles. I don’t really go out because I know it’s going to turn into a photo shoot … because I was married to the highest-paid actress in the world. Even though I’m not with her any longer, there is a certain amount of notoriety that I guess sticks beyond. It’s just not interesting to me. It’s not how I want to be defined.” - Ryan Phillipe in W Magazine

Reese Witherspoon, 31, who earns between $15-$20 million a movie, has topped the Hollywood Reporter's annual list of the highest-paid actresses. Angelina Jolie, 32, comes in second, with a similar paycheck, though she only took home $8 million for Beowulf. Third place: Cameron Diaz, 35, who cashes in about $15 million a flick. However, she banked $30 million for the third installment of Shrek this year. After a string of flops — including this summer's The Invasion — Nicole Kidman, 40, dropped two spots and now commands $10-$15 million a film. RenĂ©e Zellweger, 38, and Sandra Bullock, 43, also take home $10-$15 million, as does one-time box office champ Julia Roberts, 40 — who returns to the big screen in December's Charlie Wilson’s War. Rounding out the list: Drew Barrymore, 32 and Jodie Foster, 45, who make $10- $12 million per movie and the five-months-pregnant Halle Berry, 41, who nets about $10 million. The salary list appears in the Hollywood Reporter's "Women in Entertainment: Power 100" issue is out Tuesday.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon had another PDA-packed public date Wednesday, taking Witherspoon's two children, Ava, 8, and Deacon, 4, trick or treating in LA's Brentwood neighborhood. Witherspoon was dressed as a witch; Gyllenhaal as an ape. "They were holding hands and swinging them in the air as they walked around the neighborhood," says a witness, who added that Gyllenhaal often lifted up his gorilla mask to smooch his Rendition co-star. "Reese was laughing at everything Jake was saying." As Ava (also in a witch costume) and Deacon (a superhero) ran up to every door for treats, "Reese and Jake waited on the sidewalk and flirted," the onlooker says. "Jake tapped Reese on the butt and then she hit him back - they began running in a circle hitting each other!" the witness reports. "Sometimes he came up from behind and nuzzled his big hairy mask into her neck."

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe are legally free to marry others, court documents reveal. As of October 5, their status as a married couple was terminated. To finalize the divorce, however, they still must settle their finances and custody arrangements over daughter Ava, 8, and son Deacon, 3. Both parents are seeking a shared custody arrangement. After seven years of marriage, Witherspoon filed for divorce last November, citing irreconcilable differences. The former couple met when a mutual friend brought Phillippe to Witherspoon's 21st-birthday party. Two years later, after they had co-starred in 1999's Cruel Intentions, he proposed. They married in June 1999 and had Ava three months later.

Reese Witherspoon finally speaks publicly about her split from Ryan Phillippe in Elle mag's October issue. "Right around Christmastime I was sitting in a parking lot and I felt like I just couldn't get out of the car," she says about a moment of panic she experienced a month after the couple's breakup in October 2006. "It was like, I can't get out of the car." Witherspoon, however, says she found strength in realizing that so many others have made it through the pain of divorce. "I thought, okay, half of the parking lot has dealt with this. More than half of the parking lot has dealt with this," she tells the mag. "Okay, let's make it a little bigger. Half of this city has dealt with this. Okay, let's make it a little bigger - half of this country, until I finally got out of the car." The actress likens the memory to a scene from her Oscar-winning role in the Johnny Cash biopic: "There's this moment in Walk the Line where June Carter says, 'I was never aware of how much I was seen.' I was very aware of how much I was seen. It was this moment of self-discovery and loss of identity and who was stepping out of the car, you know? Who is that person?" And those close to her say both the triumph and losses in her life recently have changed Witherspoon. "She's a bit more liberated professionally and personally," says Andy Tennant, who directed her in Sweet Home Alabama. "If you're going through stuff in your life, you hope for the best and struggle to keep it together, and when it collapses - after the initial shock - you look around and find out who you are." Despite Witherspoon's image of being a woman in control, the mother of two scoffs at the notion. "Oh, come on, man!" she says. "I wouldn't be able to do what I do if I were [always in control]. I wouldn't be able to have the empathy or the capacity to understand different lives." The 31-year-old prides herself on her Southern values - and not being like some of the other young stars making headlines in Hollywood. "Everybody is hung out to dry now," she says of the coverage of young stars. "It's one thing if you're up for it and you want it, and you go out without your panties on. But if you're wearing your panties - gosh darn it, leave me alone!"
Ryan Phillippe hasn't exactly offered a warm welcome to ex Reese Witherspoon's off-again, on-again guy, Jake Gyllenhaal, according to Us mag. "Ryan is pissed about Jake," a Phillippe insider says, adding that Phillippe told Witherspoon, "he didn't want 'that guy' around their kids and then made some crude Brokeback Mountain remark." However, a Gyllenhaal source told the mag that "Reese doesn't have Jake spend the night when the kids are around." Phillippe is rumored to be dating Aussie actress Abbie Cornish again. "They have been hanging out since June," says a source. The pair were spotted in LA's Franklin Canyon Park on August 5.
